Turkana Necklace SB.1.7

SB.1.7
Necklace
Necklace. Turkana. Kenya. No 46. X.A.13. Original list: "Turkana. Necklace. Plant Fiber, ostrich shell. Woman, girl, elder". Long necklace of white pearls shaped and polished in discs from ostrich eggshell. The collar is thicker at the front than at the back. See Fedders, Salvadori. 1977: 88 "Akarim, ostrich eggshell necklaces used for dowry" (Donovan. 2005: 107) The original beadwork, though less bright, was more exacting; the beads had first to be made. The craft continues on a smaller scale today, diminished by the Game's Department's disapproval of the ostriches having to share their eggs with the Turkana. If the Turkana manage to avoid mother ostrich and evade officials of Game, they break the shell and chip the fragments as round as possible. After smoothing the edges in the grooves of a rock, they pierce a hole in the center of each and string them all together. "(Fedders, Salvadori. 1977: 11)
