Headdress fragments (2/2)
Two headdress fragments / Pen holder. Turkana. Kenya. No 17. XII.A.30. Original list: "Turkana. Hat. Vegetable fiber. Man, woman" Two fragments of headdress, brown, rectangular, formed of a multitude of small grooved sockets made of vegetable cords. These sockets were intended to receive ostrich feathers. They are in the upper part, sewn with black hair (cattle tail?). "Topping off a man's adornments are the ostrich plumes inserted in his headdress. The number may vary from one to a few for everyday wear to a veritable forest of feathers for special occasions" (A. Fedders, C. Salvadori. 1977: 12) "The ostrich feathers holders affixed to the top of this man's clay hairstyle are made from the pounded sinews of an ox intertwined with thin brass wire. The holders are ideal for multifeathers displays" (ref. Missing).
